As my hair grows the process changes a little. The longer it becomes the harder it is to prevent overlapping so protection with ponytails and foil to keep it in place is a must. I use towels that are very thirsty and a light color as a darker towel can leave dark lint in my hair.

This article is for your understanding of how bleach and toners work together. If I just used bleach my hair would show more very light red tones. This brassy tone is not attractive to me and the purple shampoos don't remove as much of it as I would like.

I use the blonde toners with a low cream peroxide because it deposits the type of blonde you are looking for whether cooler or warmer tones while turning purple and removing the red tones.

I have had the color turn out to cool and almost grey. All I did was add a 20 volume to bleach into a loose mixture for 3 minutes to remove the toner quickly leaving me with blonde to platinum hair that I love or could live with; after-all the red tones had already been removed

Step 1. Before the touchup process I am sure not to have any tight or pulling hairstyles for a few days before the touchup process. I apply rice water, conditioner or olive oil to my previously processed locs and let it dry completely before beginning my touch up. Immediately before the application I line my hairline with olive oil although this is not necessary

I mix my powder and peroxide in a bowl adding 5 drops of olive oil. I make the solution a little thicker than a cake mix.

Step 2. I prepare my locs by placing my hair into 8 to 10 ponytail with bands every 20 inches to keep each section from falling onto the bleach. (Now that my hair is longer I cover each ponytail with foil for added protection.) This allows me to easily apply with less chance of over-processed previously processed hair.

I always start in the front working my way to the back as I want my front to end up lighter than my back. You can start in the back as I know this is easier.

Step 3. I apply using an application brush or bottle. If I use the bottle I make my bleach solution a little looser by adding more 40 volume peroxide. I use my fingers to press the product into my hair to assure total coverage. I use a mirror to assure complete coverage. I then cover my hair with a large plastic cap. (Use a plastic grocery bag in a pinch.)

Step 4. I allow my hair to process for 15 minutes then check every 5 minutes until I am satisfied. Now that My hair is a very light color I am lightening up my new-growth a little less, which means less time.

Step 5. Time to rinse well!! Remove all foil but NOT the rubber bands. Remember, rinse very well. Wrap hair with towel and allow the towel to do the work. No rubbing and pulling.

Step 6. I mix the toner with 1 part toner to 2 part 20 volume peroxide. Always follow the manufacturers instructions. My toner turns purple because I use type that removes the red brassiness giving me a more golden look. 10 to 15 minutes is all I need. This time varies for me depending on how much red I have left. This is why I prefer blue bleach.

After the bleaching and toner is finished I rinse very well and pour some prepared rice water over my hair, squeeze most out and apply my conditioner. I know the cream conditioners make it hard for some hair to loc but what I do is give it an Braggs apple cider rinse to remove all traces of the conditioner. If your hair is very hard to loc don't use any cream conditioner, you can use a leave in liquid conditioner instead. In short. Use what works for you and your hair.

I use Jamaican Mango and Lime locs styling wax because is seals in moisture, keep my locs soft and firm and shampoos out easily. I used to use the cream but this gives me everything I want.

My biggest tip to you is to twist your locs all in the same direction. This will make it easier as you retwist your own hair to keep it neat. I hope this article has made it more understandable how each component is used during the locing maintenance process.

Hi my name is Darlene and I manage "Get Dreadlocks". As someone that has done others hair for years I have no problem maintaining my own. I decided to go blond after growing more grey hair around my hairline. Until it grows throughout my hair I've decided to just go blond and maybe platinum in the future.

STEP 1.

PREP - How I Prepped My Natural Hair Before Bleaching

2 Weeks before I bleached my hair I used sulfate free shampoo and retwist my hair with Jamaican lock wax.

Night before the bleaching I applied olive oil to my scalp and locs.

Optional: I use rubber bands to separate my locs into 7 to 9 ponytails for touch ups.

STEP 2.

I mixed my blue bleach, 3 drops olive oil, 40 volume peroxide in a plastic color applicator bottle.

NOTE: Always wear gloves to protect your hands. This product activates once mixed and can cause a chemical burn.

Apply to roots and cover with plastic or foil for best results. I allowed mine to sit for 40 minutes.

Rinse this product very well from your hair. Rinse well and towel dry..Your hair may be very red and brassy. No worries.

STEP 3.

Tone Color (to get any red out) i use Wella T15 or T16 for a more platinum color

A toner will give you the desired blonde you want faster and more efficiently. However with T16, do not leave on too long or your hair will pass the desired blonde you want but the red will be out.

One part color

two part 20 vol pero

Take T16 out by 15 to 20 minutes

T15 can stay in longer

When you think you have it all out rinse it again. It WILL dry your hair out eventually if even a little is left in
SIDE NOTE: Chemicals should be done by a professional.
STEP 4.
Prep for Retwist. Remember that rice water from the prep? Well, after rinsing your hair well and using paraffin free shampoo or co-washing product. (I use a clear paraffin free shampoo without moisturizers that will prevent my hair from becoming too soft making my hair resistant to locking). Dredge your hair with the rice water and leave for 1/2 hour to 1 hour. (I add 2 drops of peppermint to my rice water) You can rinse it out if you wish. (Refrigerate any remainer without the rice; it will go sour if you don't.
Here I am below two months later with a freshly cowashed hair which is soft, strong and healthy as you can see my hair is giving me a little "hang time". I loved it really short but now I have a little more confident with more length.

I twist my hair with a mix that sets my hair and keeps it from frizzing. I use clips if I want them thinner and tighter. Air dry or go under a medium dryer to dry well.

As you can see the top of my hair has not been retwist yet but the sides have. They will begin to fill back out as the week goes on. But not too much. By the way, I sleep with a satin bonnet. I'll show you how in another article. But here are the ingredients to my mix. I staturate my wet hair well until the end.

Aloe Vera gel

clear gel

locs wax

In the "before" and "after" pictures my hair has become thicker and healthier even with bleaching with high volume peroxide. I only bleach every 2 -3 months or so
.
Keeping bleached dreadlocks healthy is not an easy task to some. But if you regularly treat your beautiful locks like a helpless baby they will stay with you forever.

What Type of Shampoo should I use for Bleached Hair

Always use sulfate free shampoos or condition type washes for natural hair. Most importantly you will have to shampoo and rinse you locs well. I wrote about how I use rice water to strength my locs.

Keep clean and thoroughly dry. Microfiber towels absorb water well. Use very little heat in hair. Cover hair with umbrellas, hats and scarves to protect from too much sun exposure.

Moisturize scalp and spray moisturizers onto locs.

Cover with plastic cap two hours a day; twice weekly or more with moisturizers.

Always sleep with locs covered and protected.

Never use tight styles

The larger the braids the wavier you dreadlocks will become. Look at the waves and size of the braids to determine what is best for you.

You can use Isoplus styling mouse in your hair before braiding to make firmer waves. Blowdry you hair or sit under a dryer will enable you to wear you wavy style the same day.
Keeping your hair braided in a style for a week is what many do before wearing their wavey style.
They may look carefree but if you want great dreadlocks you have to put in a lot of work during the first year.

You have to know how to maintain moisture to prevent breakage.Shampoo dreadlocks properly to avoid bad smells from product, smoke, or perspiration. Learning to secrets to care and style for your dreadlocks is a must to prevent breakage from dryness.

Keeping dreads fresh and clean is very important because of the thickness and moisture that can cause bacteria growth and infestation of mites if neglect. You can rinse your dreadlocks with apple cider vinegar,Listerine, or skin antiseptic after using dreadlock shampoo in shower to keep it fresh.

I particularly like the shampoo's by Dread Head Soap for straight or curly hair. This shampoo will strip all products that cause hair to detangle and actually cause the dreadlock to become tighter and firmer. Look over my other post about other dreadlock shampoo products.

Items Needed To Shampoo Dreadlocks
Shampooing your dreadlocks can take place in the shower if they are extremely long. You will need a few things however keep in mind that there are many manufacturers that make wonderful shampoos just for dreadlocks.

LINT FREE TIP: The most important thing to remember is to use dark towel to prevent seeing lint in your hair. It is the white and light towels that cause lint to build up everytime your shampoo your dreadlocks.

2 dark towels

deep cleansing shampoo

moisturizing shampoo

leave in conditioner

antiseptic (seabreeze)

Spray moisturizer

pomade for palm-rolling

Shampoo Dreadlocks Instructions.

If there is a dandruff issue, gently scratch scalp to loosen scaly skin from scalp. Use dandruff shampoo on scalp after completely saturating hair with water and let it sit for 5-10 minute to treat scalp

Proceed to shampoo the dreadlocks with deep cleansing shampoo. You will be doing alot of squeezing and shampooing to thoroughly move shampoo thorough out the hair for 5-10 minutes. Depending on hair density.(thickness)

Rinse well.

Proceed to second shampoo with moisturising shampoo. Hair should really lather up this time and remove any left over dry skin, lint or, perspiration. While shampoo is in your hair pour in antiseptic and continue to shampoo. Let sit for 5-7 minutes to remove all odors and bacteria.

Rinse well. I know this feels good but rinse :) If you like use more after rinse and leave in.

Wrap hair with towels to absorb all moisture. Squeeze until all water is removed.

Use spray bottle for leave in conditioner if liquid form. Rub leave in cream forms in with hands.

Spray moisturizers onto hair to prevent excessive breakage and brittle hair.

Palm roll with favorite wax or pomade.

Natural Shampoo For Dreadlocks

You can shampoo dreadlocks with baking soda/apple cider paste and rinse with apple cider vinegar. You will get a deep clean and shiny hair.

REFRESHING TIP: I know this was quite a job, but well worth it . Your hair is sweet and your scalp is alive! Seabreeze antiseptic comes in different scents. I do prefer the original seabreeze without extra ingredients or antiseptic mouthwash. Store brand or Listerine will do. Not mouth rinse.

SHINE TIP: For shiny hair use apple cider vinegar or white vinegar as final rinse to remove all residue from hair. Rinse with cool water to close cuticle causing hair to shine.

Maintaining Dreadlocks

Hair should be wrapped tight during showers and workouts.

Sleep in a satin scarf or wrap to keep dreadlocks neat and free from lint.

Lightly spray water free moisturizers and sheen on hair to maintain a shiny healthy hair.

Hair should not be shampooed for the first 3-4 weeks depending on the softness of the hair. This will allow freshly palm rolled roots to loc.

Scalp is cleaned with antiseptic. Wipe scalp to refresh and clean scalp.

Keep hair protected from lint by wrapping it at night.

Place longer hair in larger braids at night for a wavy look.

View the video and notice the way the stylist holds the crochet needle.

I have used this technique and can tell you that you can hurt yourself until you get enough practice or in enough pain from the scratching. My point is for you to pull the hair in and out with pulling and pushing movements without stabbing your fingers.

No worries you will get the hang of making dreads on straight hair on your first head.
Washing dreadlocks that are thicker should take more time. The thickness can cause the debris and perspiration to go deep into the dreadlock. However the same is true for the drying time. You must allow your dreadlocks to dry thoroughly to avoid dry rot in your dreads.

Regular dreadlock washes do not remove wax from your hair. Washing dreadlocks with wax seem impossible. Click the picture on the left for wax removal.

Shampooing with a clarifying shampoo will help remove oils that get trapped in the hair and antiseptic such as Listerine or Seabreeze can freshen hair and stop odors. Many that don't use shampoos will wash their dreadlocks with baking soda and apple cider or white vinegar.

This type of cleansing will remove impurities deep in your hair and will allow your dreads to shine more brilliantly.

Be gentle while pouring with new dreadlocks. You don't have to scrub at all just let this solution work on it's own. You can gently squeeze your dreadlocks and massage your scalp if your want. The solution is ment to remove loss flakey drandruff also.

I also want to share that you should only use the white vinegar but once a month. You don't want to use the vinegar too often because it can become drying. Some people only use a baking soda wash but with the added vinegar rinse your hair will be virtually residue free. 5 Reasons Dreadlocks Become Damaged And Break

Too thin

Too much stress

Not properly rinsed/shampooed.

Dry and brittle

No protection from extensive weather.

You want to avoid your dreadlocks from becoming dry and brittle by spraying moisturizers and using moisturizing treatments to your hair and scalp. Dry hair Breaks!

Protect hair when sleeping by placing tying or covering the locs up when sleeping. Satin is the preferred fabric. You can put a soft t shirt over your head , then flip it over your dreadlocks for protection.

A satin pillow case is great to use also.

This will prevent your dreads from being stressed from pulling, rubbing and accumulating lint. The more you protect and moisturize your dreadlocks the less mishaps you will have.

If you have thin dreadlocks and some have joined together to form thicker ones forming a forked dread, you may have to cut one of the joined dreads to replace a lost dread lock. But if you still have the dread that broke you will reconnect that one!

Repair Broken Dreadlocks In 3 Easy Steps

Match the hair with weaving thread Place the two dreadlocks together so that an inch is side by side.

Sew the dreadlocks together as if your life depended on it. Use stitch that involves the needle going between formed circle of thread with each stitch. 5 times should be sufficient. Cut Thread close to dreadlock.

Palm roll the dreadlocks with product to lay stray hair over matching thread.

You can also use the crocheting method to firmly reattach your dreadlocks together. The process is very easy but takes practice. All you will have to do is have both pieces together and roll together with your fingers and use crochet needle to pull broken pieces together.
Finding the right headbands for your dreadlocks doesn't have to be such a job, you can begin to make your own headbands with simple instructions. Dreadlocks headbands have to be large enough to hold your beautiful locs out of your way and stretchy enough to secure most dreadlock hairstyles.
In the past you couldn't have dreads on every texture hair, today this is only one method on how to dread straighter, less curly hair.

Straight hair is not a reason not to have dreads anymore. Dreads can be sewn, braided, and twisted in also. Colors can also be added if you choose extension dreads. However you can dye or add color to your hair.

This method can also be used when adding extensions to hair.

Make Dreadlocks On Straight Hair Guide Step by Step Guide

shampoo

metal comb (flea comb)

aloe vera gel, pomade, or styling gel

clamps

Shampoo your hair with a deep cleansing shampoo, a conditioner is not to be used after this. You want your hair to be prepared for back combing.

Section you hair by clamping top of hair out of your way.Start around the bottom of your head.

Hair could be blown dry in sections or before beginning.

Take a section ,and start back combing with a metal comb or flea comb.Hold hair straight while working down the hair shaft

(Or Twist the section and use 7mm crochet needle to puncture hair fast while rotating hair side to side to bring stray hair out all around section work your way down to end.)

The chosen process is done throughout the entire head.

Hair is rolled between your hands (palm rolled) with a grease-less pomade ,styling gel,or nothing at all. Just imagine clay being rolled between both your hands while your trying to make it longer! (This is how to palm roll dread locs to keep neat. Do this after each shampoo!

You can pull stray hairs into the dreads with the crochet needle. This takes a lot of time.

Shampooing Dreads

You can shampoo your hair as often as you want. But if you are african american it takes three times as long for your scalp to develop natural oils necessary to maintain healthy hair. So it is best to wait at least a week.

Use a antiseptic or tea-tree shampoo to stimulate a hot sweaty scalp. If you can not shampoo your hair for some reason wipe seabreeze antiseptic or Listerine onto your scalp.Don't worry this backcombing method locks the hair right away!

Myth or Truth? CareFree Dreadlocks

Carefree dreadlocks is a myth. Your hair has to shampooed, re-touched,palm rolled, and sprayed with leave in conditioners, moisturizers, and wrapped to prevent lint from making a home. If you want to look groomed.

Practice Crochet Techniques

You can buy some synthetic hair to practice on at home before you try this on anyone. The packs cost around $2.
Learning how to make wavy dreadlocks is whats hot with men and women wearing dreadlock. Getting the perfect wavy dreadlock look for your taste depends on the method you use.

The wave method is done after your hair has been shampooed or has been shampooed not long ago. While still damp you can add setting mouse and hair moisturer to freshly shampooed hair before braiding.

If hair is already dry, you can add styling mouse or foam to the dreadlocks right before braiding each one. You will secure each braid with a small rubber band.

How To Curl Or Wave Your Dreadlocks

If you want to have tight wavy dreadlock you can take three dreadlocks ,apply styling lotion, and braid them to the end and secure them with the small rubber bands. Complete whole head.

Loose Wavy Zig Zag Dreadlocks

Most men prefer the looser zig zag type dreadlocks. You can achieve this by using more dreadlocks in the braids or cornrowing dreadlocks into rows. You may want to experiment to see what works best for you. The best thing to do is ask the person with the perfect wavy dreadlocks how they achieved their look.

How To Curl Dreadlocks
Dreadlocks can be set on sponge rollers or on long pipe cleaners for tighter curls. The pipe cleaners can be bought from a craft store very cheaply. They can also be bought to match the color of your hair.

Fold pipe cleaner in half.

Leave a circle at bended end and twist all the way to close ends.

Apply setting foam to 2 dreadlocks.

Wrap hair at bottom of pipecleaner all the way up.

Bend straight end down to hold curl.

How To Dry Dreadlock Set

I prefer the natural drying methods for softer curls, but love the dryer for a the times you need to wear you curl style the same day. Remember it is very important that your dreadlocks are completely able to dry.

After doing the whole head you can choose to wear hair out as a style for a day or two.

Cover with beanie or cap.

Dry under hairdryer.

There are many setting foams and mouses you can use. However if you need to dry fast, you can use the Isoplus extra hold styling mouse.

Doing this style is also the perfect time to retwist your dreadlocks with what ever gel you enjoy. I like the root stimulant dreadlock gel.
